No Helicopter For You

June 26

Today we were suppose to take a helicopter ride over Glacier.  We woke up to rain and wind.  Not good!  So Bruce says lets go change our trip till tomorrow.  So I decide to go with him.  I just throw some clothes on and we leave.  After we change our trip we decide we need to see the Canadian portion of Glacier so we go get our passports and take off.  We head up the Going to the Sun Road.  It's slow going because of the rain, but it is still beautiful

A different kind of beauty.

Because of the rain there were water falls everywhere

The scenery on the way to Canada is totally different.

This is Chief Mt. it is the Devils Tower of Glacier.  The Indians think it is magic.  It just pops up everywhere you look.

The road to Canada is open range so the only wild life we saw were these guys.  Ruby was really great herding them down the road!

When we arrived at Glacier North or Waterton, which is what the Canadians call it we had lunch at the Prince of Wales Hotel.  This the last of 4 lodges the great northern railroad built to promote tourism using their railroad.  This was built so they could offer a destination during probation.  I forgot to take my camera in so these are postcards, but this is exactly the way it looks inside and out.

After we had lunch we headed back Bruce said lets find a different way back.  We decided to take the road around the park.  Then we found a short cut.  Wrong!  This was worse than the road to the sun!  Parts of it were washed away and repaired with a load of gravel.  There are no pictures because I couldn't look out of the window!  So after 380 miles we rolled out of the car kissed the ground.  Ziggy was extremely glad to see us!  Big day!

We later found out that a 66 year old not so smart MAN was killed on the road to the sun.  Apparently he decided to disregard the warning signs and climbed up one of the snow fields along the road and slipped and landed on his head.  So we probably made the right descion to go around, because the road was closed so they could get the rescue vehicles to the site.
