Mt. St. Hellens to Tellamook, OR. & the Northern Oregon Coast

July 12 & 13

Today we left for Oregon.  We took I-5 to Hwy 30 and headed west to Astoria, which is where they filmed one of our favorite movies, Goonies.  We had to try and figure out where the Goon Docks were.  When we hit Hwy 101 we headed south.  The drive down 101 was great, but windy and cold.  Our RV place was in the Tillamook Valley.  There claim to fame is the fact that they have more cows than people.  They are home to the Tillamook Cheese, Ice Cream, Milk, Butter and Jerky factories.  Their school mascot is the Cheesemakers.  There are a lot of jokes there
The scenery in Oregon changes often first you're driving through forest and then the rocky cliffs.

We had lunch on the fishing docks and these are crab traps.  They lined the whole pier.  We met a couple here from Bloomington.  Go IU!  They were on their honeymoon.

We stopped at a beach.  We sure aren't going to get a tan.
Bruce had to check out the tsunami evacuation map.  Boy Scout motto you know Always Be Prepared.
This is the Cape Meares Lighthouse.  We had to play mountain goat to get to it.  They don't believe in switch back trails in Oregon.  Straight up and straight down.  This is for Dale.
This is the Octopus Tree.  It is a Sitka Spruce and they think it is over 250 yrs. old.  The tree was trained to grow this way by Indians when it was young.  It is an Indian ceremonial tree.  It was shaped like this to hold canoes and other ritual objects.  It is 50 ft at the base.
